Star Manufacturing 32' Semi-Livestock Cattle Trailer: Full Specs & Configuration Guide

When you're moving commercial cattle volumes — whether that's a 50-head cow-calf pair load or a mixed feeder run — a 24' trailer leaves you making too many trips, and a 40' semi rig requires a CDL and special routing. The 32' semi-livestock trailer sits in the sweet spot: maximum capacity for a standard gooseneck setup, room for proper pen configurations, and enough structural integrity to last 20+ years when built right.

At Star Manufacturing, the 32-footer is one of our most popular builds. This guide covers every spec, configuration option, and build decision so you know exactly what you're ordering — and why the construction choices matter for long-term ownership.

Frame & Structural Specs

The foundation of any semi-livestock trailer is the main frame. Star Manufacturing uses a 5/16" thick, 3×5 heavy angle iron frame — seam welded throughout. This is not the minimum required by code. It's the spec that commercial haulers, feedlot operators, and working ranchers have told us they need to survive rough lease roads, heavy loads, and decades of use.

  • Main frame: 3×5 heavy angle, 5/16" wall thickness, seam welded
  • Cross members: Full-length crossmembers on 12" centers for floor support
  • Tongue: Heavy-duty gooseneck configuration with adjustable coupler
  • Overall length: 32' box (trailer bed), not including tongue
  • Width options: 6'8", 7'0", or 7'6" inside width
  • Side height: Standard 6'6" or tall 7'0" wall options

The seam welded construction is a critical differentiator. Many budget trailers use stitch welds (intermittent welds along the frame seams). Seam welding means continuous weld coverage — every inch of frame contact is bonded. Under repeated stress loading, stitch welds are the first thing to crack. Seam welds hold.

Hot Dip Galvanized Finishing

Every Star Manufacturing trailer — including all 32' semi-livestock builds — goes through full hot dip galvanizing. The entire assembled frame is submerged in a 840°F molten zinc bath. Zinc bonds metallurgically to the steel — not as a surface coating, but as an integrated layer of zinc-iron alloy crystals.

This process delivers:

  • Complete coverage including interior welds, bolt holes, and hidden frame cavities
  • Zinc coating thickness of 3.9 mils (ASTM A123 grade) minimum
  • 25-50+ year corrosion resistance in agricultural environments
  • No spray rust through chipped paint, no bubbling, no rust creep

For a 32' trailer that's going to haul cattle through Gulf Coast humidity, creek crossings, and cattle pen mud, galvanized is not a luxury upgrade. It's the difference between a trailer that looks solid at 10 years and one that's rotting from the inside at year 7.

Laser-Cut Components & Precision Assembly

Star Manufacturing uses laser-cut steel components with tabbed-and-slotted joinery. Each part is cut to precise tolerances on the laser table, then fitted together using interlocking tabs before welding. This eliminates the measurement error and fit gaps that accumulate in hand-fabricated construction.

The benefit is not just aesthetic. Tight-fitting components mean:

  • No stress concentrations at poorly fitted joints
  • Consistent weld penetration across all assemblies
  • Every trailer built to the same spec — not dependent on which welder had a good day

Configuration Options: Pens, Gates, and Dividers

The 32' body gives you genuine flexibility for pen configuration. Common layouts:

Full-Length Open Deck

Maximum capacity for uniform loads. A single-pen 32' trailer at 7'0" wide holds approximately 24–28 mature cows (850–1,200 lb range) or 35–45 feeder calves depending on weight and load density. No center dividers means easier cleaning and full deck access.

Two-Pen Split Configuration

A sliding or removable center gate divides the trailer into a 16'/16' split. This is the most versatile configuration for mixed loads — bulls and cows separated, bred heifers away from steers, or simply smaller groups managed safely. The center gate position can often be adjusted forward or rear depending on load balance needs.

Three-Pen Configuration

Two interior dividers create a front pen (approximately 10'), mid pen (12'), and rear pen (10'). This works well for operations moving multiple pasture groups, sorting-pen loads, or calves with a few pairs. Rear gate access to all pens depends on your gate layout choice.

Bar Top vs. Solid Side

The upper portion of the trailer side wall can be configured as bar top (horizontal bars above a solid lower half) or full solid sides. Bar top is the standard choice for cattle — it allows airflow and reduces heat stress during transport. Solid upper sides are used for show cattle or smaller animals where containment and visual calming is a priority.

Axle & Suspension Specs

  • Axle count: Tandem axle standard; triple axle available for heavier-duty loads
  • Axle rating: 7,000 lb per axle standard (14,000 GVW tandem), upgrades available
  • Suspension: Spring-ride standard; rubber torsion available
  • Tires: ST235/80R16 load range E — 8-ply minimum
  • Brakes: Electric brakes on all axles, breakaway kit standard

Floor Options

Floor choice on a 32' livestock trailer matters for both animal traction and long-term maintenance. Star Manufacturing offers:

  • Treated wood planks: 2" oak or pine — traditional choice, good traction, replaceable planks
  • Aluminum floor: Non-absorbent, easier to pressure wash, lighter, longer service life
  • Rubber mat overlay: Can be added over either floor type — improves traction and joint protection for animals during loading/unloading

For commercial hauling operations where the trailer is loaded and unloaded daily, aluminum floors with rubber mat overlays are the lowest-maintenance long-term choice. For cow-calf and stocker operations with less frequent use, treated wood planks remain the most cost-effective option. Learn more in our flooring comparison guide.

Gate Configurations

The rear gate setup on a 32' semi-livestock trailer significantly affects loading and unloading efficiency:

  • Full-width swing gate: Single rear gate swings to one side — maximum opening, works well at loading chutes
  • Split swing gate: Two half-width rear gates that swing independently — allows loading from the side without losing the full gate option
  • Rear ramp gate: Gate folds down as a loading ramp — useful when a fixed chute isn't available
  • Side escape door: Small walk-through door on driver or passenger side — for emergency access and minor livestock handling without opening the main gates

Most commercial operations choose split rear swing gates plus a side escape door. The split configuration gives flexibility; the escape door prevents full gate operation for minor adjustments en route.

Electrical & Lighting

  • LED running lights, clearance lights, and brake/turn lights standard
  • 7-way RV blade connector
  • Interior dome lights optional (recommended for night loading)
  • DOT reflective tape — full compliance

Weight & Towing Requirements

An empty Star Manufacturing 32' semi-livestock trailer weighs approximately 4,200–4,800 lbs depending on configuration (axle count, floor type, side height). Add your load:

  • 25 cows at 1,100 lbs = 27,500 lbs livestock
  • Trailer at 4,500 lbs empty
  • GCVW: ~32,000 lbs

At this weight, you need a 3/4-ton or 1-ton diesel pickup with a rated fifth wheel or gooseneck hitch at minimum — typically a Ford F-350, Ram 3500, or Chevy/GMC 3500 with the appropriate receiver. Most operators use the F-350 or 3500 for occasional moves and step up to a medium-duty or Class 6 truck for daily commercial hauling. See our full towing requirements guide for detailed GVW and hitch ratings.

Customization & Build Options

Star Manufacturing builds to order. Common custom requests on the 32' platform include:

  • Extended tongue length for specific truck wheelbase compatibility
  • Custom pen placement or gate count
  • Saddle compartment or tack box addition
  • Feed trough attachment points
  • Spare tire mount
  • Custom width (narrow 6'4" for tight ranch road clearance)

Why Star Manufacturing for Your 32-Footer?

The 32' semi-livestock platform is a significant investment — one that should last 15–25 years in active commercial use. The details that determine longevity are the ones that don't show up in a spec sheet photo: the wall thickness of the frame steel, whether welds are full seam or stitch, and whether that galvanized coating penetrated every internal cavity or just the visible exterior surfaces.

Star Manufacturing uses the same heavy-gauge steel and hot dip galvanizing process regardless of trailer size. We're a manufacturer in Wharton, TX — not a dealer moving product from a distant factory. When you have a build question, a warranty issue, or a custom spec request, you're talking to the people who built it.
