4-H & FFA Livestock Trailers for Youth Programs

Livestock Trailers for 4-H & FFA Youth Programs

If your family is in 4-H or FFA, you already know the season: county fair, district, state — sometimes all three in a single spring. Getting your kid's project animal to the show ring safely and on time means having a trailer that works every time you hook up. Not a trailer that needs convincing.

Star Manufacturing builds livestock trailers in Wharton, TX for families who need reliable, right-sized equipment that won't let them down during jackpot season. We're not building trailers for the show ring — we're building trailers that get you there.

Right-Sizing for Youth Livestock Hauls

Most 4-H and FFA families don't need a 40-foot semi trailer. What they need is a well-built trailer in the 14'–24' range that handles efficiently behind a pickup truck and gives their animals enough room to travel without stress. Here's how our sizes typically line up with common show projects:

Trailer Size Project Animals Best Configuration
14'–16' 1–2 show steers, 4–6 hogs/sheep/goats Bumper pull, single-axle or tandem
16'–20' 2–4 steers, multiple small animals Bumper pull or gooseneck, interior divider
20'–24' Family operation, multiple projects Gooseneck with interior sorting gates

For families with both cattle and smaller livestock projects, an interior divider with a smaller front compartment for hogs or sheep and a larger rear section for steers lets you haul everything in one trip.

Why Construction Quality Matters at the County Fair

County fair weekend is not when you want to discover your trailer's ramp gate is binding, a floor board is soft, or a latch won't hold. Show parents learn fast that cheap trailers cost more in stress and repairs than the savings were worth.

Star Manufacturing's trailers are built around a 5/16" thick, 3×5 heavy angle frame — seam welded. Every weld is fully fused. The floor boards are solid, the gates latch positively, and the frame doesn't flex in ways that cause door and gate alignment problems over time.

Our hot dip galvanizing process protects the entire trailer — submerged in molten zinc, not painted or sprayed. A show family's trailer sees a lot of manure, a lot of water from hosing down, and a lot of varying weather conditions across a show season. Paint blisters, bubbles, and eventually peels under those conditions. Hot dip galvanizing doesn't.

Safe Loading for Young Handlers

One thing worth considering when buying for a youth program: the trailer needs to be manageable for a 14-year-old handling a 1,200-pound steer. That means:

The FFA Chapter & Club Trailer

Some FFA chapters and 4-H clubs operate a shared trailer for members who don't own their own equipment. For a shared-use trailer, durability and ease of maintenance take on even more importance — it'll be driven by dozens of different families with varying levels of trailer experience.

For chapter trailers, we recommend:

Texas Show Season Logistics

If you're showing through the Texas 4-H and FFA system, your season runs from local jackpots in the fall through county fairs in January/February, district shows in February/March, and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo or Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo in late winter. Some families are on the road nearly every weekend from October through March.

Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) requirements apply to movement of livestock across county lines in many circumstances. For show cattle, you'll typically need:

Check with your county extension agent for current requirements — they change periodically and vary by species and destination.
