Brake Controller Guide for Cattle Trailers

A loaded gooseneck cattle trailer can weigh well over 15,000 lbs, and live cattle shift. Good braking is a safety item, not an option. Star trailers can be built with electric brakes, and those brakes need a brake controller in the tow vehicle cab. Here is how to choose and set one up. Figures below are general industry guidance; always follow your controller and axle manufacturer instructions.

Types of Controllers

  • Time-delayed: applies a preset ramp of braking after you press the pedal. Inexpensive, but not proportional to how hard you stop.
  • Proportional (inertia-based): senses deceleration and applies trailer brakes in proportion. Smoother, and generally preferred for livestock because it avoids lurching cattle forward.
  • Factory-integrated: many newer heavy-duty trucks include one; check the truck's settings menu.

Setting It Up

  1. Confirm the plug and wiring match the trailer's 7-way connector.
  2. Enter the number of axles (single vs. tandem).
  3. Start with gain low, tow on a flat, empty road at about 25 mph, and apply the manual lever. Raise gain until the wheels are just short of locking.
  4. Re-adjust when loaded. A full load needs more gain than an empty trailer; many ranchers keep a note of both settings.

Livestock-Specific Tips

  • Brake early and gently; sudden stops pile cattle onto the front.
  • Check brake magnets and wiring at least yearly, and after wet or muddy hauls.
  • Test the breakaway switch and battery regularly.
  • Match tongue load with the tongue weight guide.
