Half-Top vs. Covered Cattle Trailers
Choosing a roof is a tradeoff between airflow and protection. Star offers a half-top (solid panel over the nose or gooseneck, open over the rest) and a fully covered build with a complete solid roof. A third option, bar-top, stays fully open. Here is how the first two compare.
Side-by-Side
| Factor | Half-Top | Fully Covered |
|---|---|---|
| Airflow | Strong over the open section | Limited; add roof vents |
| Sun and rain protection | Front section only | Whole trailer |
| Visibility of cattle | Good | Through side openings only |
| Added weight | Moderate | Highest |
| Hot Texas summers | Better cooling, shade at the front | Shade everywhere, needs ventilation |
| Cold, wet climates | Some exposure | Best protection |
Which Should You Choose?
Choose half-top if you haul in hot weather, want to see and manage animals easily, and want cover where cattle crowd, up front. Choose fully covered if you haul cows with calves, show stock, or travel through rain, snow, or long sun exposure, and are willing to add vents. Weight matters for towing: a full roof adds steel, so check your tow vehicle against the GVWR guide.
Construction
Either roof is welded to the same seam welded 5/16" frame and hot dip galvanized as one assembly, so there are no painted-over joints to rust.
